The Vernissage is a wild mixture of live club, exhibition, cinema, bar and lounge, and was designed entirely by Zermatt-based sculpturer and artist Heinz Julen. It normally holds about 400 people, but was only half-filled for tonight’s show.

For the first few minutes of the concert people still tried to stay as far away from the stage as possible, but very soon everybody was making themselves comfortable by sitting down in relaxed semi-circle in front of the stage.

With that a very intimate atmosphere arose and James Walsh, armed with only an acoustic guitar and a piano, had to deliver the goods.

And he easily delivered, with a brilliant and very soulful performance and a well-balanced setlist. The timidness quickly fell off the audience, and sitting inside the Vernissage suddenly felt like sitting at a campfire, with someone playing old classics, while everybody else sings, claps and grooves along without caring about what they might look like to the eyes of an outsider.

And so of all the artists of this year James Walsh probably played the show that stayed the most true to the Zermatt Unplugged philosophy. His concert did just deliver all of what you might hope for when you go to an unplugged show, in terms of what both the artist and the audience might be up to.

The setlist featured a couple of new songs (Soul On Trial, Desert Rain, Long Way To Love) and a good lot of Starsailor classics (Silence Is Easy, Poor Misguided Fool and of course Four To The Floor).

The latter especially gained a lot of profile and intensity in their acoustic versions and also refreshingly lost some of the gravitas of their original arrangements.

Some convincing cover versions helped to raise and then keep the good mood, as James Walsh added a trace of the Eagles (Take It Easy), a touch of Neil Young (a couple of lines from Surfer Joe And Moe The Sleaze), a dash of Bruce Springsteen (some bars of Atlantic City) and of course the Stones by the spoonful (You Can’t Always Get What You Want) to an already great musical dinner.

Whether he was stomping across the stage playing guitar or hitting the more silent notes at the piano, he just always struck a chord with an audience that had come here from a long day on the slopes around the Matterhorn, and was subsequently quiet but still curious for something unique.

It takes a full-blooded entertainer to mix a brew this intense with the given ingredients. During the quiter passages, you could have heard the sound of every dropping bottle – if anybody had actually dropped one. But tonight’s audience was much too solemn and respectful for that.

Good Souls, already an established show-closer with Starsailor, marked a passionate finale that summed up everything that was great about this evening, and even came garnished with some lines from Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind.

All in all the concert offered a perfect symbiosis of sound, setting, light and atmosphere. The very clear and voluminous mix added as much to that as the unique interieur of the Vernissage:

Post-modern chandeliers, spiral stairs evoking memories of sci-fi movies, soft lights in warm colours over a well-stacked bar and excellent acoustics in almost every spot of the location – every mile you live away from this club is definitely one too many.

SUMMARY:
James Walsh revealed outstanding one-man-show qualities with his show at Zermatt Unplugged.

He wisely used the reduced arrangements to fill out the empty spaces with immediacy and intensity, and with this strategy easily won over the ears and hearts of even the most sceptical visitors to the show.

One man and his instrument unifying one audience – that’s exactly the way handmade music is the most fun.

BY THE WAY:
After the show, James joined the party crowd at the Vernissage and spent a great deal of the night dancing and drinking with old and new fans and friends. During his show he had already prophylactically warned everyone: “In the UK I’m known as a mild-mannered, clean living person, but everyone in Switzerland will think I’m an alcoholic…”

Die vom Zermatter Künstler Heinz Julen gestaltete einzigartige Mischung aus Live-Club, Ausstellung, Kino, Bar und Lounge bietet Platz für 400 Leute, war heute abend aber nur knapp zur Hälfte gefüllt.

Nachdem anfangs noch irritiert in möglichst großem Abstand zur Bühne herumgestanden wurde, machte man es sich dann doch sehr schnell gemütlich und setzte sich in einem großen entspannten Halbkreis um die Bühne. So entstand eine sehr private Atmosphäre, und James Walsh konnte (und musste) angesichts des anfänglichen Begeisterungsdefizits nur mit Gitarre und Klavier bewaffnet beweisen, was er drauf hatte.

Und das hat er mit verblüffender Leichtigkeit getan. Im anfänglich so zurückhaltend gestimmten Saal entfachte er mit einer äußerst beseelten Performance und einer sehr feinfühlig zusammengestellten Setlist innerhalb kürzester Zeit echte Lagerfeuerstimmung.

So hat sein Auftritt die Philosophie des Zermatt Unplugged Festivals perfekt aufgegriffen.

Zu hören gab es neben einigen neuen Stücken (Soul On Trial, Desert Rain, Long Way To Love) jede Menge Starsailor-Klassiker (z.B. Silence Is Easy, Poor Misguided Fool und natürlich Four To The Floor).

Gerade diese Stücke gewannen durch die Reduziertheit in den akustischen Versionen deutlich an Schärfe und vor allem Eindringlichkeit, und verloren etwas von der Schwere der ursprünglichen Arrangements.

Ein paar eingestreute stimmungsvolle Coverversionen sorgten zusätzlich für gute Laune im Saal: Eine Prise Eagles (Take It Easy), ein Hauch Neil Young (ein paar Zeilen aus Surfer Joe And Moe The Sleaze), ein Esslöffel Bruce Springsteen (ein paar Takte aus Atlantic City) und natürlich ein kräftiger Schuss Stones (You Can’t Always Get What You Want).

So spielte er nach kurzer Zeit vor einer geschlossen klatschenden, mitsingenden und selig vor sich hin wippenden Gemeinde, die vom Mann auf der Bühne alles forderte und alles bekam, was man sich von einem Unplugged-Konzert überhaupt erhoffen kann.

Ob er klampfend und stampfend über die Bühne rockte oder ruhige Töne anschlug: er traf mit seinem Konzert genau den Nerv eines Publikums, das nach einem langen Tag auf der Skipiste und dem Festival hierher gepilgert kam und dementsprechend ruhig, aber auch neugierig war.

Es bedarf eines echten Vollblut-Entertainers, um aus diesen Zutaten eine derat intensive Stimmung zu brauen, dass man in den leisen Passagen das Klimpern jeder Flasche gehört hätte, wenn denn jemand eine umgeworfen hätte. Dafür war man im Publikum dank James Walsh jedoch zu andächtig, still und feierlich.

Der Starsailor-Hit Good Souls (garniert mit ein paar Zeilen aus Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind) geriet zu einem leidenschaftlichen Finale, das keine Wünsche mehr offen ließ.

Insgesamt bot der Abend eine perfekte Symbiose aus Klang, Licht, Stimmung und Schauplatz. Neben dem sehr klaren und voluminösen Mix begeisterte auch das Interieur des Vernissage, das einen Großteil zur würdevollen Atmosphäre des Abends beitrug:

Postmoderne Kronleuchter, Wendeltreppen wie aus Science-Fiction-Filmen, warmes Licht in sommerlichen Farben über einer gut bestückten Bar und dazu eine ausgezeichnete Akustik an jeder Stelle im Saal – jeder Kilometer, den man von diesem Club entfernt wohnt, ist einer zuviel.

FAZIT:
James Walsh hat mit seinem Konzert bei Zermatt Unplugged nicht nur handwerklich herausragende Unplugged-Qualitäten bewiesen, sondern den durch die Reduzierung des Instrumentariums frei gewordenen Raum mit einer selten gehörten und gesehenen Intensität ausgefüllt, und so die Ohren und Herzen selbst der skeptischsten Zuhörer im Sturm erobert.

Ein Mann, eine Gitarre, ein Saal, eine Stimmung: so macht handgemachte Musik Spaß. James Walsh musizierte an diesem Abend überzeugender und effektvoller denn je.

BY THE WAY:
Nach dem Auftritt mischte sich James noch unter das feiernde Volk im Vernissage und machte tanzend und trinkend mit seinen Fans die Nacht zum Tage.

Vorsorglich hatte er schon während es Auftritts angekündigt: “In the UK I’m known as a mild-mannered, clean living person, but everyone in Switzerland will think I’m an alcoholic…”

Billy Idol. Comes with open shirt, occasional pouting and trademark fist shaking if genuine.

In 2001 he played a special acoustic show for VH-1 Storytellers and achieved no less than his triumphant return to music television. The accompanying DVD bought him a lot of street credibility and reached out to a good couple of new listeners.

Fittingly, Billy Idol and band now paid an exclusive visit to the Swiss Zermatt Unplugged festival, and turned the huge tent at the foot of the Matterhorn into a huge partying zone within minutes.

Mister Idol and his band really didn’t need any electric guitars to build a solid wall of sound. While his VH-1 Storytellers show had most of the songs reduced to just guitar and vocals, Zermatt recieved the full Billy Idol treatment:

Nearly all the songs were played with a full band lineup: Stephen McGrath (bass) and Jeremy Colson (drums) layed an edgy but very precise rhythmic foundation, on which Billy Morrison and Steve Stevens (both acoustic guitar) built wild musical creations.

The audience didn’t remain seated for very long: Just a couple of minutes into the show, most people were standing, singing and partying enthusiastically in front of their seats. The Zermatt crowd turned out to be very familiar with Billy’s lyrics, so the party vibe quickly spread through the whole tent.

The setlist didn’t leave much room for wishes and included all the hits you would expect at a Billy Idol show, like Dancing With Myself, Flesh For Fantasy and of course Eyes Without A Face.

With 13 songs played in total, one or two more surely wouldn’t have hurt. Concentrating on the classics though kept the great vibe on a constant high level throughout the show.

The arrangements that were played at Zermatt Unplugged were all rehearsed exclusively for the festival. Thus, Idol and his band performed the classic Rebel Yell in a relaxed lounge version that got everyone clapping along for eight minutes straight. Snapping his fingers, Billy strolled across the stage and later grooved away on a pair of tonewood blocks. That made two ununsual sights in one Billy Idol song.

Just like at the Storytellers show, the acoustic arrangements helped the songs shine a great deal: The unplugged version of White Wedding provided a much sharper dramaturgical arc than the original version, Prodigal Blues gained even more authenticity and down-to-earthness.

The relaxed setting inside the tent also helped shorten the distance between band and audience. Just perfect for a guy like Billy Idol: Hey may not have had a choice in signing autographs during the whole of the show, but it was pretty obvious that he enjoyed himself a lot doing so and being given the rockstar treatment.

This man just refuses to age, as do his poses and gestures. His fans obviously have kept a very young-at-heart attitude too. When a very enthusiastic woman kept begging for a kiss at the side of the stage, her Idol didn’t take very long to react and grant her the wish. Tonight’s Billy Idol was a very modest and polite one.

Traditionally artists at Zermatt Unplugged are expected to use only acoustic instruments on stage. Mister Idol bent this concept a little though, using keyboards or guitar synthesizers audibly in two places.

In both instances, this was done in a very decent and careful way. Still it would have been nice and probably not very complicated to have filled these parts with purely acoustic instruments.

The show stayed true to the Zermatt Unplugged philosphy all in all though. The sound of acoustic guitars suited Billy’s voice wery well, and the arrangements all featured a great deal of pure wooden glory, most notably Stephen McGrath with an upright bass and lots and lots of percussion.

SUMMARY:
All in all a very Zermatt Unplugged-worthy performance: Billy Idol in great form and mood, backed by a tightly groooving band.

A setlist full of evergreens that were performed here in special arrangements, prepared exclusively for the night. Add to that a party vibe that went straight through the roof. What more could you ask for? Ah yes, an autograph of course…

Billy Idol. Nur echt mit offenem Hemd, schmollendem Mund und natürlich der zum Markenzeichen gewordenen Gewinner-Faust.

2001 hatte er mit einem Unplugged-Konzert für VH-1 Storytellers nicht weniger als sein Comeback ins Musikfernsehen hingelegt und mit der dazugehörigen DVD gehörig an Street Credibility gewonnen.

Jetzt haben Billy Idol und seine Band passenderweise dem Zermatt Unplugged Festival in der Schweiz einen exklusiven Besuch abgestattet, und das Festzelt am Fuß des Matterhorns in eine einzige große Party verwandelt.

Herr Idol und seine Band stellten auch ohne Stromgitarren ein ziemlich kräftiges Soundgerüst auf die Bühne. Wurden seinerzeit bei VH-1 Storytellers die Songs noch auf Gitarre und Gesang reduziert, gab es heute abend die volle Packung:

Fast alle Stücke warteten mit komplettem Band-Lineup auf. Stephen McGrath (Kontrabass) und Jeremy Colson (Drums) legten ein kantiges aber präzises Grundgerüst, auf dem sich neben Billy vor allem Steve Stevens (Akustikgitarre) gehörig austoben durfte.

Den bestuhlten Saal hielt es nicht lange auf den Sitzen: Nach wenigen Minuten stand der Großteil des Publikums bereits singend und feiernd vor den Sitzgelegenheiten. Die meisten Anwesenden zeigten sich dabei verdächtig textsicher, so dass die gute Stimmung schnell bis auf die oberen Ränge durch den ganzen Saal schwappte.

Die Setlist ließ auch keine Wünsche offen, und bot zielsicher alle Hits, die man von Billy Idol erwartet, zum Beispiel Dancing With Myself, Flesh For Fantasy und natürlich Eyes Without A Face.

Er hätte bei insgesamt gespielten 13 Stücken sicherlich noch ein-zwei Songs drauflegen können. So bot die Konzentration auf die Abräumer allerdings einen Set, der die Party-Stimmung im Raum ohne Atempause von einem Highlight zum Nächsten mitnahm.

Die Arrangements, die an diesem Abend zu Gehör kamen, wurden allesamt speziell für das Festival geprobt. Den Klassiker Rebel Yell spielte die Band zum Beispiel in einer swingenden Acht-Minuten-Version, bei der Herr Idol lässig fingerschnippend über die Bühne tigerte. Ein ebenso seltener Anblick wie die Klanghölzer in seiner Hand, mit denen er bei diesem Song sanft mitgroovte.

Wie schon 2001 kam das Unplugged-Soundgewand den Songs sehr zugute: White Wedding glänzte mit deutlich schärferem Spannungsbogen als das Original, Prodigal Blues strahlte in der Unplugged-Version noch mehr Erdigkeit aus.

Das entspannte Setting verringterte außerdem merklich die Distanz zwischen Band und Publikum. Genau das Richtige für Billy Idol: Er hatte zwar keine andere Wahl, als permanent Autogramme zu geben, hat es aber mit sichtlicher Freude und Hingabe getan.

Dieser Mann weigert sich einfach zu altern, genauso wie seine Gesten. Seine Fans sind sympathischerweise auch noch sehr jugendlich unterwegs. So ließ es sich ein weiblicher Fan nicht nehmen, von ihrem Idol am Bühnenrand vehement und lautstark einen Kuss einzufordern. Selbstverständlich erfolgreich, Billy Idol gab sich heute abend ausgesprochen handzahm und bescheiden.

Traditionell kommen beim Zermatt Unplugged ausschließlich akustische Instrumente zum Einsatz. Dieses Konzept hat der Meister ein wenig ausgehöhlt und zumindest an zwei Stellen klar erkennbar Keyboards bzw. Gitarren-Synthesizer eingesetzt.

Zwar jeweils sehr dezent und absolut songdienlich, trotzdem wäre es viel schöner und wahrscheinlich nicht sehr kompliziert gewesen, die Stellen mit rein akustischen Instrumenten auszufüllen.

Das Konzert verbeugte sich ansonsten aber doch sehr vor der Philosophie von Zermatt Unplugged. Der Klang von Western-Gitarren ergänzte sich optimal mit Billy’s markanter Stimme, und die Band hat an diesem Abend auch sonst eine Menge Holz auf die Bühne gebracht: Neben Stephen McGrath’s in jeder Beziehung wuchtigem Kontrabass eine bunte und stilvoll eingesetzte Auswahl an Percussion-Instrumenten.

FAZIT:
Ein im Gesamten absolut Zermatt Unplugged-würdiger Auftritt: ein gut gelaunter Billy Idol, unterstützt von einer tight grooovenden Band.

Im Programm ein bunter Reigen von Evergreens in besonderen Arrangements, die es nur an diesem Abend zu hören gab. Dazu Stimmung bis unters Dach. Was will man mehr? Ein Autogramm vielleicht…

Ihr aktuelles Album Tertia, im August 2009 erschienen, besticht mit einer Mischung aus lichtdurchfluteter Aufgeräumtheit einerseits und großem tiefenhypnotischem Potential andererseits, und wurde flächendeckend als willkommene Abwechslung im zuletzt etwas auf der Stelle tretenden Post Rock-Zirkus begrüßt.

Live entfachen Erin Burke-Moran, Chris Friedrich, Philip Jamieson, Calvin Joss und Joe Vickers aus Massachusetts einen unbarmherzigen musikalischen Sog, dem sich der neugierige Hörer einfach widerstandslos anvertrauen sollte.

Wer nach Köln ins Gebäude 9 kommt, bekommt sogar ein ganzes Post Rock Festival serviert: Hier spielen Caspian, Constants, Arktika, Yamon Yamon und Izah an einem Abend, Beginn daher schon um 19 Uhr.

Wilde Auftritte in englischen Pubs und ausverkaufte Hallen in Hamburg oder Köln sprechen eine deutliche Sprache: Man muss kein Bayrisch können, um mit LaBrassBanda ordentlich abzufeiern.

Enough going on to be curious about the band’s perspective of the tour, we thought. When Drew Roulette from dredg agreed to do an e-mail interview with us, our interviewer Björn got so excited that he had to watch a good lot of Monty Python episodes and Nardwuar interviews to cool him down again. Or so he thought…

nolivelost: 2009 saw the release of dredg’s long anticipated album “The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion” and had you touring all over the US and Europe. Are you happy with the reception so far?

Drew: yes, very content with the response. we like making stuff. we like when people like our stuff we make. sometimes people dont like our stuff. we dont care.

nolivelost: The album incorporates an incredible range of musical styles: moshable rock, R&B-like grooves and melodies, mellow ballads, jazzy bits, just to name a few.
Although not included on the album, you also experimented with electronic, techno-ish beats. Was that high level of diversity a general idea from the beginning, maybe as a contrast to the more compact and straightforward “Catch Without Arms”, or did it just happen naturally as you went along?

Drew: moshable rock. moshable. jumpable. sleepable. dropmybeerable. leaveable.
diversity is always aspired to with dredg. we wanted to go somewhere that “catch” didn’t.

d. all of the above because it also happens naturally.

nolivelost: In november you played the new album in its entirety at a couple of shows, like you did in the past with some of your older albums. Is performing a whole album entirely different for the band compared to playing a regular setlist?

Drew: its a lot easier to make the set list. it sets a certain mood for the evening.

nolivelost: At these shows, you’ve had Anton and Lewis Patzner from Judgement Day supporting you on strings. You’ve also had saxophone players with you in the past. What other instruments would you love to see on stage with dredg? Any plans for the future in that field?

Drew: of course things like choirs, harps, orchestras, armys of reactables, tubas, herds of theremins are ALL wonderful ideas.

nolivelost: You use a wide range of equipment on stage. What would you estimate is the amount of power consumed by a dredg show?

Drew: too much, if we are talking electric currents. not enough, if we are talking aggression in riffs.

nolivelost: You’ve had your last show in Cologne videostreamed live across the internet. Was that a first for you? And would you consider doing something like this again in the future?

Drew: it was a first for us. it felt like any other concert. events like this are good because more people can be involved. the most fun party has more people, right? die grammer!

nolivelost: You’re very popular in Germany, so you’ve toured the country a lot. What was the weirdest thing you ever ate in Germany?

Drew: a bleeding pussy

nolivelost: dredg shows assemble a pretty diverse crowd: there is clapping along, singing along, a bit of moshing, and people just standing around, listening attentively. What kind of concert goer are you personally? Do we see you frantically jumping around or rather relaxing at the bar?

Drew: im like a little kid getting all craahahaazy in the background at a gogol bordello show. im like a little introverted stoner caught in a blank stare at a radiohead show. im like a drooling, lustfull smirk at a bjork show. im asleep in my bed at a justin bieber show. im like a trench coat mafia member at a christian rock show. im drunk at all the others.

nolivelost: A while back, Mark and Dino wrote and recorded the soundtrack for the film Waterbourne, a suspenseful drama about a terrorist attack on Los Angeles’ water supply. What kind of other movie genres could you imagine dredg doing a soundtrack for?

Drew: any and all. give us some visuals and we will cook up some weird shit.

nolivelost: What about Roland Emmerich: If he had asked you to do the soundtrack for “2012″, what would it have sounded like?

Drew: a can of smashed assholes.

nolivelost: According to amazon.com, customers who bought the DVD of “2012″ also bought “Armageddon: The Criterion Collection”. Where do you see the connection?

Drew: ignorance.

nolivelost: You have a very active fanbase on the internet that meticulously collects every dredg bit from tv, radio or the web. Are you much of a music collector yourself? And if so, what are the bands that make you roam flea markets or internet archives?

Drew: i own a lot of live pink floyd bootlegs. they are my “go to” band when it comes to seeking obscure recordings. i also have a lot of bootlegs from the band tool. ever heard of em?………… lately i have been searching for live animal collective recordings. i love that band like it was my cat mixed with my iphone mixed with my weed mixed with falafels. have you ever youtubed falafel? it makes me hungry.

nolivelost: You’ve played a good couple of summer outdoor festivals in both Europe and the US during the last years. Any festival plans for 2010 yet?

Drew: no. i wish. im getting bored over here. entertain me. send me some model skyscraper building kits or something.

nolivelost: On the web there’s speculation about unreleased recordings from the Pariah sessions and a possible upcoming release of some of that material. Can you disclose any details on this?

Drew: the only dredg related talk lately has been through emails. is that weird? we never see each other. is that sad? i dont know. it seems appropriate right now. i mean, i sit down on my toilet and i think:

“remember when……………………………. what if………………………… omg…………………………… what if we did this…………………………… oooooooooooo, how about…………………..?”

but we will see each other again. soon, actually. and we will look at each other and say, “you look good. you look handsome. your talented. people like you.” and then we will just tickle each other until we lose our shoes.

anyway, when we DO talk though email, we talk about new ideas. new ways to create more unique art. we discuss possibilities and turn nobs. we talk of getting into the studio soon. finishing some of that leftover material from the pariah sessions. writing new songs. to just exist.

nolivelost: You’re also an avid illustrator and have designed most of dredg’s artwork together with Gavin. What’s your favourite restaurant in town?

Drew: falafels drive in.

nolivelost: Your artwork features a lot of pretty unique recurring elements, like clouds with eyes, sad looking animals or cyclops wearing strange hoods. Where did you draw the inspirations for that from?

Drew: clouds with eyes? i dont know what the fuck that is, but your scaring me. and cyclops wearing strange hoods?!?!?!!!!!!!??? fuck, my eyes are watering now. they do that when i see ghosts.

nolivelost: You grew up and live in California, quite near to the San Andreas fault. What would be your recommendations (as a supposed expert) for the first thing to do in the event of an earthquake?

Drew: my house actually sits on the san andreas fault. literally. fuck. ironically we just had an earthquake here in california yesterday. i called my brother to see if he was ok. (i actually didn’t but if you read this beau, just pretend like i did. if not just for the sake of the interview. thanks.)

nolivelost: You’re from a town called Los Gatos and are known to have a cat called Tobias, who even can be heard on one of your tracks. Your thoughts on “Fritz The Cat”?

Drew: did you know that 3.14 spells pie in the mirror?

nolivelost: If you were abducted by aliens and forced at beampoint to recommend one – and only one! – tv show of the 60s, what would it be?

Drew: of the 60’s? fuck if i know. but if it were to be from modern times, i would recommend curb your enthusiasm.
